I’m new on this website, and I am going to buy red cherry shrimp. I have never kept them before, so any advice is appreciated. I’m thinking about buying them from a website called Shrimpy Business, from what I can tell they have a good reputation but what do you guys think?
Make sure your tank is planted with lots of frilly type plants like hornwort and/or guppy grass and also driftwood. Also buy some moss and use aquarium glue to glue it to the driftwood. Shrimp love and need places to hide. Put a piece of calcium rocks in for stronger shells. Lighting should never be too bright, they shy away from it. Your filter doesn’t need to be strong if you’re only keeping shrimp in the tank as they don’t produce a lot of waste but the do need some sort of flow as they are filter feeders. Watch videos online and do a little reading and you’ll be an expert shrimper in no time.
Enjoy!
PS Shrimpy Business is an excellent supplier, I buy most of my shrimp from them and none have ever been DOA!!
A sponge filter is recommended for shrimp. Sweetnekked’s advice is great! Lots of plants, they’ll enjoy caves, tubes, and similar. If you haven’t yet, I recommend learning about adding things like dried leaves and alder cones, neocaridina enjoy eating the biofilm layer on them and it mimics their natural environment if that’s a style that you enjoy.
Don’t try to achieve perfect water parameters with a bunch of chemicals and constant water changes - they need stability and consistency more than a perfect pH score. Let your shrimp tank age and let plants get established before adding shrimp. If you have another aquarium use some of whatever filter in the shrimp tank to help the water cycle establish.
They’re so much fun to watch! Enjoy!
